Human Rights Activist Erika Huggins Impacts COM Students at Black History Month Event

“Stop the messages that we’ve been taught of how you’re not good enough. These are the words of Erika Huggins, human rights activist, poet, educator, student and former Black Panther.

Huggins was the guest speaker here on campus in honor of Black History Month. Huggins has lectured throughout the United States. Her life of experiences has inspired her to speak on a personal level regarding physical and emotional issues for women, children, and youth, as well as the importance of education. Huggins also spoke about her on her spiritual passion.

Another highlight of this event a dance performance from Oshalla Diana Marcus and Company. Marcus is a well-known dance artist, spoken word poet, facilitator and therapist.

This event took place in the James Dunn Theatre on February 8 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Students, faculty and guest were filled the room. Erica engaged with the audience in a open forum for questions and answers. The Umoja community and EOPS students did a meet and greet before and after the event.

President David Coon welcomed students and guests during the event, and a reception with great hors d'oeuvres followed immediately after the event.
